Balanced Dog Training refers to an approach to dog training where the handler uses both rewards and aversive methods to achieve results. When given a choice between an unpleasant outcome and a pleasant outcome, a dog will always choose the pleasant outcome. Utilizing both methods of training can increase the speed at which a dog learns and changes their behavior. In some situations it is imperative to apply aversive techniques- such as when a behavior is putting the dog’s life or position in a loving home at risk.
My training style does lean toward a positive approach. I always attempt to achieve results with positive reinforcement methods before implementing any aversive methods. I am trained in the proper use of e-collars and have found great success using them to achieve results when positive methods are not meeting the needs of the dog and owner.
I, Kelsey, have nearly 20 years of experience training dogs. I have been training dogs professionally since 2014. Before that, I was the “go to” trainer for all of my family members, friends and neighbors. My formal education is in Learning Theory and Cognitive Development; two vital aspects of understanding canine behavior and how to modify it.
